SMLL

The future is autonomous

Smart Mobility Living Lab (SMLL) is situated in the heart of London, with facilities in Greenwich and the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. It is Europe’s most advanced connected and autonomous mobility urban testbed, offering real-world testing and development of future mobility solutions.
SMLL provides a real-world environment where vehicles operating under current legislative controls and strict safety requirements on the existing road network will be subject to monitoring and data gathering. Organisations that are developing new products and services can use the SMLL to test their products and business models.

Whilst autonomous vehicles can be tested on any UK road, supporting infrastructure is limited. Additionally, as autonomous vehicles develop there will be an increasing need to test them in greater numbers, to test new services and applications, and to better understand their impact on cities. SMLL was designed to cater to all of these needs.

The role of DG Cities

DG Cities played a critical role in building this national centre of excellence. We provided the city perspective when defining the challenges that prospective clients are facing that the SMLL was designed to address, and established that a key objective for the SMLL was to ‘Understand the impact of new mobility on people and places.’

As a result, cities and regional authorities can use the SMLL to understand the impact that these types of new technologies will have on cities and the people within them.

We also led the connectivity infrastructure requirements development and deployment, as well as the design and build of the physical facilities in Woolwich and Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

Why is this work important?

The SMLL will enable the testing of CAVs and new mobility services in the real world environments of the Royal Borough of Greenwich and the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. It is going to help us build safer, cleaner, sustainable, accessible, more intelligent and better joined-up transport systems, turning the mobility products and services of the future from innovative ideas into commercial reality.
